Advent Readings 2012

Last year, with children aged 9 and 6, we introduced a new time of Bible reading, in addition to their regular morning devotional, just for Advent.  We all enjoyed it so much we are making it a new tradition.  We like to do it in the early evening, once we have lit the Advent Candle.  Advent begins on the 4th Sunday before Christmas and therefore changes in length each year, so the set of readings has to be slightly revised each time.  This year, Advent is 23 days long, 2nd-24th December, but I’m including passages for 1st December as Advent candles and calendars will all start that day, and also the nativity passages for Christmas Day.  The two passages often link together to demonstrate how Jesus fulfils the Old Testament, but the passage in bold is the “main” passage for the day, if you prefer to stick to one reading.

Saturday December 1st : Gen 1:1-26; Rom 1:20 – God created everything and Creation speaks to us about him

Sunday December 2nd: Gen 3:1-6; Rom 5:12 – As humans rebelled against God, sin entered the world

Monday December 3rd: Gen 3:23-24; Is 59:2 – Sin separates us from God and prevents us relating to him

Tuesday December 4th: Gen 12:1-3; Gal 3:6-8 – God did not give up on people, but promised Abraham that he would bless all nations through him

Wednesday December 5th: Gen 22:1-13; Jas 2:21-22 – Abraham showed his faith by doing what God asked

Thursday December 6th: Gen 37:23-28; Mt 27:1-4 – Joseph’s story mirrors Jesus’ death and resurrection (this part shows the betrayal but you could talk about Joseph’s life generally)

Friday December 7th: Ex 11:1-7; Jn 1:29 – Just as the Lamb died in place of God’s people in Egypt, Jesus died in our place

Saturday December 8th: Ex 19:7-9; Rom 8:34 – Moses mediated between God & the people but Jesus does it much better

Sunday December 9th: Ex 17:5-6; Jn 7:37-39 – God provided water for his people when they needed it, Jesus provides life all the time to those who come to him

Monday December 10th: 1 Sam 16:6-12; Is 53:2 – The heart, not the exterior, is what matters to God – Jesus’ love is what draws us to him

Tuesday December 11th: 1 Chron 17:16-24; Lk 1:26-33 –  Jesus is the eternal king in the line of David

Wednesday December 12th: Ps 118:22-24; 1 Pet 2:4-7 Just as it had been prophesied, Jesus was rejected even though he was at the centre of God’s plan

Thursday December 13th: Is 53:4; Mt 8:16-17 – By healing the sick Jesus fulfils the OT prophecy (shows that God has always had the same plan)

Friday December 14th: Is 53:5; Mk 15:16-20 – In being beaten and mistreated Jesus fulfils another prophecy

Saturday December 15th: Is 63:7-9; Rom 6:23 – If we have faith in God through Jesus we will have eternal life; rejecting God leads to rejection by God

Sunday December 16th: Mic 5:2; Mt 2:4-6 – The Christ will be born in Bethlehem

Monday December 17th: Mic 5:4; Lk 15:4-7; 19:10 – Jesus is the shepherd of his people, he has come to seek and save those who are lost

Tuesday December 18th: Is 40:3-5; Lk 3:15-16 – John came to prepare the way for Jesus the Christ

Wednesday December 19th: Mt 1:18-24; 1 Tim 1:15 – Jesus came to save people from their sins

Thursday December 20th: Lk 2:1-5; Jn 7:42 – Jesus was born in Bethlehem, in family of David (linking back to 11th and 16th)

Friday December 21st: Heb 1:6,14; Rev 5:11-13 – Jesus is God! He is worthy of all praise

Saturday December 22nd: Lk 2:15-20; Acts 1:8-9; 4:18-20 – The shepherds told everyone the good news, and so should we

Sunday December 23rd: Mt 2:1-6; Rev 7:9-10 – The Magi came from far away to worship Jesus, he is the Lord of all nations

Christmas Eve: Jn 3:16; Rev 22:20 – Jesus came once, to die for us, and will return one day!

[Christmas Day: Lk 2:6-7; Mt 2:7-12 – Jesus is born & worshipped]
