General thoughts and wittering about all sorts of things

Stealing (an idea), stretching (a point) and saving (time)

on June 12, 2012

Here’s the deal: I’m committed to too many things today and if I don’t get a move on I’m not going to get everything done.  This morning I was committed to my weekly reading session with the Butterfly’s class at school, this afternoon I was committed to building the storage for her bedroom.  I managed both of those.  This evening I’m committed to my writing time, blogging my way through the Great Writers challenges and preparing a Bible study for my group which meets tomorrow.  Hmm.

So my plan is to roll them all into one.

Day 6 of the series tells me that my word is steal.  Or, more specifically: “Find a quote or a painting or some form of inspiration — and steal it. Make it your own. Attribute it — give credit where it’s due — but don’t be afraid to use it. Let someone else’s work springboard you into your own.”

I was puzzled by this at first until I realised that it’s not a new habit I need to master – I do this all the time.  I plunder events in my own life, my friends’ lives, the conversations I have, music I hear, films I watch and books I read for ideas for my writing.  Not copying, just using tiny fragments of anything that comes my way to make my own patchwork and for the most part any individual bit will be unrecognisable (I’d hope!).  I did it last week when I wrote the short story about the dying Grandma and the engagement announcement.  It would appear that it’s quite common behaviour, if this post is anything to go by.

Obviously the kind of writing I’m talking about is fiction, but tonight I’m going to use the same principle for another kind of writing, for the sake of fitting everything in.  If I read the Bible passage which is the focus of tomorrow’s meeting (along with a commentary or two) and then prepare my study on it, have I not allowed the work of others to springboard my own?  That might be stretching a point but I think it’s still OK!

And I shall be back tomorrow, hopefully with more time on my hands!

I love the idea of a patchwork. And that is indeed what it is: lots of gathered ideas that appeal to you in particular, all stitched together. One small seed can bear much fruit! xxx
